Professor Mark Cassidy
Professor Mark Cassidy is Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology and Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Melbourne. The Faculty comprises over 800 academic and professional staff serving over 11,000 students.
Mark graduated in Civil Engineering from the University of Queensland, and as a Rhodes Scholar, attained a doctorate in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford. Prior to his appointment in Melbourne in 2018 he was an Australian Research Council (ARC) Laureate Fellow, Director of the Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems (COFS) and the Lloyd’s Register Foundation Chair of Offshore Foundations at the University of Western Australia.
Mark’s research interests are in offshore geotechnics and ocean engineering. He is currently concentrating on foundation, mooring, and anchoring solutions for the design of offshore wind turbines, submerged floating tunnels and deep-water gas fields. Mark has published over 350 refereed journal and conference papers and jointly holds three international patents. He is the co-author of the Lloyd’s Register Foundation Foresight Review of Ocean Safety, published in 2021. He has supervised over thirty PhD students and remains an active consultant within the offshore engineering industry.
Mark is an elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (FAA), the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (FTSE) and of Engineers Australia (FIEAust).
Mark is passionate about safe and sustainable engineering in the ocean, though he still is failing in teaching himself to surf.
