Sanley S. Abila holds a PhD in sociology from Cardiff University, Cardiff, Wales, UK. For his PhD, he was a recipient of a PhD fellowship of the Seafarers International Research Centre of Cardiff University and Nippon Foundation of Japan. For more than 10 years now, he has been doing research on the intersections of maritime sociology, sociology of education, and occupational health and safety of mariners. Currently, he is a member of the faculty of the Division of Professional Education, University of the Philippines Visayas. He teaches at the master of education program handling courses on philosophical and sociological foundations of education, research methods, and social institutions such as on the intersections of education, work, and health.
