The Global Safety Evidence Centre supports evidence creation that contributes to a safer world.
Our work focuses on addressing critical safety evidence gaps, strengthening understanding of what works to improve safety outcomes, and ensuring that evidence is of the best possible quality. We support evidence generation through a combination of in-house research, commissioned research, funding opportunities and strategic partnerships.
The Centre's research priorities within our evidence programmes - Safe Work and Safety Science (including the World Risk Poll) - guide our grant funding. Areas of Research Interest (ARI) documents will be published soon, which will specify in more detail the research questions and evidence gaps we are looking to address in these areas.
Grant partnerships
We are committed to supporting the delivery of quality, impactful research that advances understanding of what works to improve safety outcomes. Alongside funding, projects funded by the Global Safety Evidence Centre must meet the technical standards and the quality assurance processes designed to strengthen research quality, relevance and impact.
Good quality evidence is:
- Credible and robust: built on reliable methods appropriate to the context.
- Relevant and useful: answers real world questions with actionable safety outcomes.
- Communicated well: reaches people who can and want to use it.
We support a range of ‘what works’ research, based on global evidence reviews of what is already known and practitioner-led areas of research interest of what is needed next. This includes:
- Collate – evidence reviews and synthesis.
- Create – new primary research including: stakeholder expertise and practice mapping, user-focused research, randomised control trials and field-based studies, experimental and quasi-experimental evaluations, and data collection, analysis and modelling.
Research support and quality assurance
Funded projects are supported by a dedicated Technical Lead from the Centre who is a methodological expert and works closely with project teams throughout the research process. The level and type of support vary depending on the project but may include:
- Methodological input and quality assurance.
- Support to ensure research is aligned with the project's objectives and intended users.
- Advice on evidence generation, synthesis and reporting.
In addition, each project is assigned a dedicated Case Officer who serves as the primary point of contact for grant management and project delivery. The Case Officer works closely with project teams throughout the grant period and may provide:
- Day-to-day support on grant management, reporting and project administration.
- Coordination between project teams and the Centre.
- Guidance on stakeholder engagement and knowledge mobilisation.
- Support in maximising the accessibility, usability and impact of findings.

All funded projects are expected to meet the Foundation's standards for research quality, ethics, transparency and responsible research practice. Current funding opportunities
We support research that builds on World Risk Poll data and insights through our Small Grants Scheme.
We welcome discussions on strategically aligned initiatives and partnerships that apply Poll findings to address critical safety challenges and drive meaningful impact. Work in progress: Global Safety Evidence Centre grants
In late 2025 the Centre ran a funding opportunity to support research addressing priority evidence gaps within the Safe Work or Safety Science programmes.
Funded projects contribute to understanding what works to improve safety outcomes and provide evidence that can inform policy, practice and future research. These projects were announced in the autumn of 2026.
Work in progress: World Risk Poll into Action
The World Risk Poll into Action programme supports projects that use insights from the World Risk Poll to address real-world safety challenges. These projects are generating new evidence and practical learning, as well as interventions to improve safety, resilience and risk management in different contexts around the world.

Strengthening urban resilience by equipping cities with a data-driven, community-centred methodology that aligns investment priorities with local needs
Resilient Cities Network and Arup are working with the cities of Lagos in Nigeria, and Salvador in Brazil, to integrate World Risk Poll data and insights into existing resilience frameworks to enhance risk assessment, improve decision-making, and target investments that respond to both lived experience and scientific evidence. Through inclusive stakeholder engagement, data validation, foresight analyses and co-development of an investment prioritisation methodology, the project will help cities institutionalise risk-aware governance and strengthen trust between communities and decision-makers. The approach will be scalable and replicable, enabling broader impact across global urban resilience networks and improving long-term city planning and resource allocation.

Improving access to forecasts for early response in South Africa
The South African Weather Service, UK Met Office and University of Bristol are working to support communities in the second lowest income quintile, who have been identified by the World Risk Poll as being significantly less likely to receive early warnings in the event of severe weather and potential disasters. This project will work across three areas of South Africa to understand barriers and improve information dissemination mechanisms. The lessons learned will be used to scale up improved early warnings across southern Africa.

Strengthening localised early warning systems in Ethiopia and Nepal to build resilience to landslides
The Global Network of Civil Society Organisations for Disaster Reduction (GNDR), the National Society of Earthquake Technology Nepal, and Light for Generation Ethiopia are partnering up to identify vulnerabilities, integrate indigenous knowledge, and implement low-cost early warning technologies. By closing gaps in early warning, strengthening local leadership, and influencing national disaster risk reduction policies, this project empowers communities to anticipate, respond, and recover more effectively

Understanding behavioural insights for better waste management
The Global Environment Centre Foundation and UN Environment Programme are exploring the intricate relationship between social behaviour and waste management practices, aiming to identify key behavioural factors that influence waste disposal and recyclability. The results will inform targeted interventions designed to enhance public engagement and promote better waste management strategies, ultimately contributing to a cleaner and safer environment and improved community health.

Training in construction workplaces in Southern Asia and Northern Africa
The Building and Wood Workers International (BWI) is improving construction safety in countries with high accident rates such as Pakistan and Tunisia by combining targeted OSH training with hands-on risk assessments and incident reporting. By showcasing real examples from major construction projects, it aims to demonstrate how tailored training and incident reporting can make workplaces safer.

OSH Connect: The Global Occupational Safety and Health Data Platform
Monash University is integrating World Risk Poll data with other international OSH data sources, to create a single-source global database of country-level workplace safety statistics. Accessible via an interactive dashboard, it aims to improve risk management, worker and community health by providing practical insights for policy and action.

How does inequality shape the risk of unintentional injury at work?
Researchers from The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) are analysing World Risk Poll data to better understand the difference in actual risk and perceived risk of workplace harm across the world. Through cross sectional analysis of different demographic groups, this research will provide a global perspective on the link between socioeconomic factors and workplace injuries.

Technological change and occupational safety
The University of Groningen is leveraging World Risk Poll data to examine how technological advancements, such as AI and information and communication technology, affect workers’ perceptions and reporting of occupational risks across the world.
