Alex Stitt joins Heritage & Education Centre

Alex has joined Lloyd's Register Foundation as the new Director of the Heritage & Education Centre

Alex joins Lloyd's Register Foundation from the Victoria and Albert Museum in South Kensington, where he was Director of Commercial, Digital and Exhibitions since 2014. He was responsible for transforming the V&A website, as well as for a string of the most successful exhibitions in the museum’s history, including Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, Pink Floyd: Their Mortal Remains and Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams. Prior to that he was a entrepreneur in the early days of social media, founding, growing and selling software business. Before that he had a successful career as a publisher of books, magazines and national newspapers.

"This is a great moment to join the Heritage and Education Centre and the wider Foundation. The HEC is about to complete a milestone project digitising a large part of the LR archive and re-presenting that to the world, both on-line and in the new physical centre in Fenchurch Street. We now want to push on from here to create a centre which will have global impact, increasing the understanding of the role the ocean economy has had in shaping the modern world." said Alex.

"With 15 years’ experience in digital media, including working with a national collection, I am confident that I can lead HEC in the next stage of its evolution into a global resource. I have an MBA from INSEAD which means that I have a wide range of management and leadership skills, and my commercial experience, both as an entrepreneur and within blue chip corporations, will give me a strong appreciation of the interests of the wider LR group."

Richard Clegg, Chief Executive of Lloyd's Register Foundation, says "Alex’s appointment as the Director of our Heritage and Education Centre represents an exciting new era in the history of Lloyd’s Register. Alex’s experience, ambition and vision can establish the Heritage and Education Centre as not only one of the most impressive maritime archives in the country, but a unique knowledge hub that will enhance our understanding of safety at sea through our shared seafaring history."

"Through public outreach programmes, grant-giving activity and opening access to the valuable history of Lloyd’s Register, the Heritage and Education Centre has contributed to Lloyd’s Register Foundation’s charitable mission, and Alex’s appointment is another key milestone in helping make the world a safer place.”
