Safer maritime systems
Safety across the maritime system is a key consideration in building a sustainable ocean.
people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods.
Meeting the challenge of maritime - together.
Globally, we all rely on the ocean to provide food, energy, and the transit of goods yet working at sea remains one of most dangerous occupations in the world.
Safety of people working to provide services both at sea and on land is paramount. We work to create safer solutions to the challenges affecting those working in the maritime sector, most notably decarbonisation, digitalisation and the impacts of climate change.
Three billion people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods according to the United Nations. It is important they are involved in what happens to protect that environment.
At Lloyd's Register Foundation, we want to make certain all voices are heard in discussions to drive interventions around risks in the new challenges and opportunities in maritime driven by changing climate, energy transition and technological innovation.

Why a sustainable ocean economy can’t be built on unsafe systems
A sustainable ocean economy demands more than innovation, investment, and decarbonisation - it requires safe systems. Dr Randhi Satria, Country Lead of Ocean Centres, Indonesia, explains why safety must be the starting point for the maritime industry's future.
Safer Maritime Systems
As climate change, decarbonisation, and rapid technological shifts reshape the maritime sector, risks to those working at sea continue to grow. Lloyd’s Register Foundation brings partners and communities together to tackle these challenges and create evidence‑based interventions that improve safety. Guided by both present insights and maritime heritage, we work toward a safer, more sustainable ocean future.
