Leaders at UN general assembly

This week, Ruth Boumphrey attended the High-Level Ocean Meeting at the 78th United Nations General Assembly in New York, discussing the key opportunities and challenges facing the global maritime industry.

The High-Level Ocean Meeting

The High-Level Ocean Meeting at the UN General Assembly (UNGA) is convened by the United Nations Global Compact Ocean Stewardship Coalition, bringing together heads of state, ocean industry CEOs and the finance community to determine how governments and the private sector can deliver on sustainable ocean management and ocean-based climate solutions.

Lloyd’s Register Foundation Chief Executive, Ruth Boumphrey, emphasised the importance of safety in delivering a net-zero transition in the ocean economy, speaking alongside high-profile maritime stakeholders such as Kitack Lim, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), Stephen Cotton, General Secretary of the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) and Inger Andersen, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Ensuring a safe and just transition for people and property throughout the maritime value chain is a key aspect of the Foundation’s mission, and a fundamental component of a healthy, productive and resilient ocean.

Reflecting on her involvement at the High-Level Ocean Meeting, Ruth Boumphrey said: “People must feel and be safe, and have access to decent jobs and new opportunities as we rewire our global energy systems. The scale and rate of change can seem overwhelming, but accelerated by our partnerships with organisations like the IMO and UNGC, the Foundation will help deliver high standards of safety, whilst supporting the sustainable and resilient supply of energy, food and improved livelihoods for millions in the future."
