Monitoring risks, preventing disaster

High impact, low frequency (HiLo) incidents at sea are notoriously difficult to predict, and the consequences can be disastrous for ships, crews, economies and ecosystems. Risk modelling can help reduce the number of incidents and ensure that seafarers are kept safe while working at sea.

Now five years into being an independent company, HiLo Maritime Risk Management started as a joint initiative between Shell Shipping and Maritime, Maersk Tankers A/S and Lloyd's Register Foundation, bringing key players in the maritime industry together to nurture an alternative approach to safety at sea.

Combining vast datasets with predictive modelling, HiLo interlinks warning signals with future catastrophes, to calculate and rank maritime risk. Adopting this proactive perspective ensures disasters are identified in advance and minimised in the future.

‘Shipping Forecast’ – one of ten works featured in ‘SAFE: A collection of works exploring a safer world’ – is a futuristic visualisation of how HiLo’s state-of-the-art risk modelling software works in practice – utilising information from the various departments of the ship to anticipate and notify crew when potential disaster may strike.
