Furthering maritime safety research

A formal ceremony has been held in South Korea to celebrate a multi-million pound grant from the Lloyd’s Register Foundation for work on safety in shipping by Seoul National University’s College of Engineering.

Ruth Boumphrey, CEO at Lloyd’s Register Foundation attended the signing along with Seoul National University President Yoo Hong-lim, Seoul National University (SNU) College of Engineering Dean Kim Young-oh, British Deputy Ambassador to Korea Gareth Weir and Samsung Heavy Industries Vice-Chairman Choi Sung-an.

The Foundation has awarded £4 million to the university for research over the next five years. The research will concentrate on three areas where evidence gaps need to be addressed to drive the development of standards and safer operations. Firstly, design of fuel tanks and systems to reduce the safety risks associated with using alternative fuels; secondly, risk prediction and prevention, specifically addressing dynamic instability and loss of manoeuvrability in waves; and thirdly, development and application of digital techniques to enhance safety at sea.

Ruth commented: “The innovative research and development at SNU will not only advance maritime safety but also contribute significantly to addressing global challenges such as climate change and energy transition. This partnership exemplifies our commitment to fostering cutting-edge technologies and standards that benefit the maritime community and society at large.”

The project based at the Lloyd’s Register Foundation Research Center for Safety of Future Ship at SNU will significantly contribute to the safety and sustainability of future maritime operations.
