Foreword

Professor Richard Clegg, in conversation, sitting on a sofa.

The last 12 months have challenged our understanding and perception of safety.

With the impact of the pandemic still reverberating worldwide, and the effects of climate change becoming more distinct and frequent, our role as a charity that endeavours to improve the safety of people and property has never been so important.

Despite the enormous pressures of the last year, the global community came together like never before in its commitment to ensuring a safe and sustainable future for our planet. We saw significant strides towards a more holistic global conversation around safety, most notably at COP26 where Lloyd's Register Foundation and many of our partners were present.

It’s in this environment that our 2021 Impact Review, Frontline, was curated and produced. Capturing our charitable mission in practice, it profiles individuals supported by the Foundation who are working tirelessly on the frontline of the world’s biggest safety challenges – providing innovative solutions to the critical safety issues of our time. The review also highlights how our funding is helping to make a real difference to the lives of people around the world.

2022 will be my final year as Chief Executive of Lloyd’s Register Foundation. Having the opportunity to be the Foundation’s first Chief Executive has been an absolute honour and privilege. At the heart of Lloyd’s Register is its social purpose to make the world a safer place, and the work of the Foundation brings that to life.

We hope you enjoy reading our Impact Review – and that the stories we tell will inspire you to work with us in the future.
