Resilience Rising – a new global non-profit consortium

Lloyd's Register Foundation funding has helped launch a new global non-profit consortium, Resilience Rising. Its purpose is to enable and create a safe, resilient and sustainable future for all.

Our global systems are facing mounting pressures from rising population, urbanization, the warming planet, and inadequate physical and digital infrastructure. By increasing our ability to adapt, grow, and survive – becoming more resilient – we can mitigate the myriad complex and interconnected challenges that confront us today.

No one can solve these challenges on their own, and therefore Resilience Rising is bringing together multiple communities of practice under a shared purpose to reorient how we think about and influence change. By empowering leaders, providing expertise, and accelerating innovation, we are driving systemic change with a proven solution – resilience.

In the next few years, more funding than ever before will be granted by philanthropic organizations to address resilience and climate change adaptation. As a consequence, new organizations will spring up that do not have the capabilities and scale to leverage this investment at pace, risking fragmentation of funding, limited coordination and underperforming impact.  Even many existing organisations are often so small that they never reach scale without access to investment, resources and capacity-building support. We need a revolutionary approach to: perpetuate continual change; reinvent the current funding paradigm; and unite organisations within a common orbit to drive change.

Resilience Rising is focused on addressing the challenges that are currently standing in the way of ushering in the big, transformative, and systemic change we need.  We know today’s global problems cannot be solved in silos, which is why we are supporting a consortium that harnesses the capacity for humans to collectively address major societal challenges by incorporating resilience in our networks and systems.

At launch, the Resilience Rising consortium organisations include The Resilience Shift, Resilience First, International Coalition for Sustainable Infrastructure (ICSI), and Navigating a Changing Climate (NavClimate).

Resilience Rising has been created by the leadership team behind The Resilience Shift, an initiative created by Arup and Lloyd’s Register Foundation, and will be the host for The Resilience Shift from 2022 onwards. The Resilience Shift will continue as a key pillar of the new consortium.

Lloyd’s Register Foundation provided the core funding for Resilience Rising.

Resilience Rising CEO, Seth Schultz said,

“At a time of unprecedented change and uncertainty across the fragile systems that underpin our society, and a time of increasing funding for new solutions, we are re-imagining radical collaboration to bring about a global step-change. We will connect with and transform key communities of practice that are essential to swiftly ensure that resilience is understood and put into practice globally.  Our focus is to bring together organizations and initiatives to deliver a safe, resilient and sustainable future for all.”

Lloyd’s Register Foundation CEO, Richard Clegg said,

Lloyd’s Register Foundation are very proud to have created The Resilience Shift with Arup and funded its programme over the past 5 years.  I am delighted to witness its impact upon infrastructure, engineering and climate change adaptation.  The work of Resilience Rising will be pivotal in the next decade to deliver a safe, resilient and sustainable future for all.”
