Overview
Hundreds of people from around the world were welcomed to Old Billingsgate Market in London and many more online for Lloyd's Register Foundation's Safer World Conference 2022. They were joined by over forty international thought leaders from research, academia, business and government as we discussed today’s biggest safety challenges and the new approaches needed to create a safer world.
It was also the first opportunity to bring together members of Lloyd’s Register Foundation’s global grants community since the covid-19 pandemic. Many of our grant holders got the opportunity to exhibit their work at the Safer World Exhibition – including an interactive risk game, sampling seaweed-based snacks, a chance to take part in the World Risk Poll, and an art installation imagining a zero-carbon maritime industry.
Speakers
The speakers covered a wide range of topics including safety in a post-covid world, creating and maintaining safe and sustainable oceans, the importance of social purpose business, engineering skills and education and understanding risk.
Highlights from the fascinating programme include:
Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, President of the World Maritime University, discusses how the maritime industry can deliver a successful bounce back from Covid-19.
James Michel, Former President of the Republic of the Seychelles, explores how we can build a safe, sustainable and inclusive future ocean that creates economic growth and security for all the world’s citizens.
Alex Edmans, Author of ‘Grow The Pie’ and Professor of Finance at London Business School, explains how social purpose business can make the world a safer place.
Tracey Brown, Director of Sense about Science, illustrating how greater access to risk information can improve safety decisions.
