Researchers from Lloyd's Register (LR) and Risk Know-how have presented new evidence on alarm fatigue in the maritime industry to Members of Parliament and peers at Westminster, helping to bring the realities of modern ship operations into discussions on frontline safety and future policy.
As part of Evidence Week in Parliament 2026, LR Lead Data Scientist Asger Christian Schliemann Haug and LR Global Head of Technology Duncan Duffy shared findings from LR's latest research into alarm fatigue and its impact on safety-critical decision-making. The session highlighted how the growing volume of alerts and alarms faced by seafarers can contribute to cognitive overload, affecting performance and increasing operational risk.
The researchers met with MPs, peers and scientific advisers, including Professor Dame Angela McLean, Baroness Browning, Dr Lauren Sullivan MP, Mims Davies MP and Lord Mair, to discuss how evidence-based policy can help address challenges facing frontline professionals across a range of industries, including shipping.
Thanks to the involvement of research partners like Risk Know-How, members of the public were able to put questions directly to MPs and Lords about evidence use on the issues that matter to them.
Evidence Week, now in its ninth year, is run by the campaigning charity Sense about Science, in partnership with communities and research institutions from across the UK. During the week, MPs meet with leading scientists to get the latest insights on pressing issues covering topics as varied as clean energy to AI sovereignty. It is an opportunity for the public, parliamentarians and researchers to come together to share knowledge and insights. s
It also empowers legislators to engage with evidence and equips them with the critical tools to handle uncertainty, identify bias and scrutinise underlying assumptions.
