Discovering Safety develops techniques to analyse and aggregate safety data worldwide to prevent accidents at work.

Harnessing insights from safety-related data to predict, prevent and reduce workplace accidents.

Overview

Established in September 2018 by Lloyd’s Register Foundation and the UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the Discovering Safety programme develops innovative techniques to analyse and aggregate safety data worldwide to predict, prevent and reduce accidents at work.

Discovering Safety is built around HSE’s comprehensive accident and incident investigation information, which spans a large number of industries and covers the past 50 years. By augmenting this vast data set with other sources of information, the Discovering Safety programme can unlock new knowledge on occupational health and safety, making this accessible for academic and industrial partners around the world.

Discovering Safety has multiple workstreams, including:

  • Construction Risk Library
    • This project leverages 3D and 4D visualisation tools, developed by 3D Repo and Okana, to identify and reduce construction safety risks during the earliest design stages, when risks can be eliminated most effectively. Pilots from the project are generating interest and work is underway to increase adoption in industry.
  • Leading Indicators
    • The Leading Indicators project supports proactive health and safety management in the construction industry by encouraging preventative actions, such as providing protective gear and promoting mental wellbeing, to reduce harm and improve safety outcomes. Outputs include educational content and digital tools to further spread good practice.
  • Loss of Containment (LoC)
    • The Loss of Containment project uses Text-Mining and Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to help predict and prevent large-scale chemical accidents. Outputs from this project will include the development of tools and apps to be shared with industrial partners.

“HSE has been gathering information on workplace accidents and incidents for 50 years, including over 182,000 new reports every year. By supplementing that with data from industry stakeholders, we have access to over 1.7 terabytes of data. This is a massive programme that’s going to make a difference to health and safety on a truly global scale.”
