Overview

In 2019, Lloyd’s Register Foundation invested £15 million with the Royal Academy of Engineering to help establish Engineering X. Active in over 35 countries, Engineering X tackles global safety and sustainability challenges and promotes the contribution of engineering to solve them.

Lloyd’s Register Foundation sponsor three programmes with Engineering X, each with a unique strategic vision and governance structure. The Skills for Safety programme is focused on enabling the delivery of skills for safer engineering through education, advocacy, community building and collaborating with industry.

Outputs of the programme include The Global Engineering Capability Review, a landmark study that introduces a new framework for measuring a nation’s ability to conduct engineering practices safely and effectively, and provides recommendations on how to prioritise challenges and address capacity gaps. The Skills for Safety programme also awards impact grants, funding around 40 projects in 23 countries looking at different aspects of safety, safety training, policy and safety skills provision.

Engineering X is looking to grow and bring in new partners and funders. To explore potential collaborations, visit the Engineering X Skills for Safety webpage.

We connect people across borders, disciplines and sectors, promoting the role of engineering in solving the world's most pressing safety challenges. In particular, we target lots of grants through smaller-scale Skills for Safety projects in more than 30 countries all over the world.
