Maritime safety is often discussed in terms of incidents, accidents and emergency response. "From prevention to response: building safer maritime systems together" set out to look at the wider picture: what shapes safety long before an incident occurs, what helps people put safety knowledge into practice, and what happens when prevention falls short and the search and rescue system is needed.
The session brought together people from across maritime communities, industry, education, training, regulation and search and rescue. Through films, facilitated conversations and small-group exercises, participants explored maritime safety as a connected system shaped by people, relationships, knowledge, capability, infrastructure, institutions and communities.
The day began with findings from Lloyd's Register Foundation's World Risk Poll, followed by a real-world story from South Africa's National Sea Rescue Institute and an introduction to Maritime Connected, Lloyd's Register Foundation's approach to understanding maritime safety as a wider system.
Rather than asking participants to arrive at a single solution, the day invited them to examine different parts of that system and consider what needs to connect for safer outcomes to happen.
