Lloyd’s Register Foundation have today announced a new Foresight Review on Nature-positive Engineering. The review will seek to achieve new clarity on the definition of nature-positive engineering, gain insights into the current state of practice, insights and research in this field, identify new and emerging trends, and provide a framework for traditional engineering approaches to become ecology-inspired from ideation to implementation and delivery.
The review will be conducted by the International Coalition for Sustainable Infrastructure (ICSI), which brings together engineers, cities, investors, academics, NGOs and businesses to address the challenges at the intersection of climate change, ecosystem degradation, ageing infrastructure, and underinvestment.
Speaking to this new collaboration, Savina Carluccio, Executive Director at the International Coalition for Sustainable Infrastructure and primary lead on the NPE Foresight Review, said: "I am delighted that ICSI is leading this Foresight Review at a time when the world is in urgent need of engineering practices that uplift nature and protect communities. As in all of ICSI’s work, the project will prioritize learning from one another to transfer knowledge and scale up best practice. Through an extensive consultation, we aim to stimulate and advance the debate on NPE while ensuring that we are inclusive of all voices."
The focus of the review will centre on coastal and marine environments, with deep dives into:
Emphasis will be placed on the value creation and scalability of NPE solutions throughout their full life cycle, ensuring safe practice and attention to biodiversity is embedded at every stage from design to decommissioning.
Reflecting on the need for foresight in this area, Jan Przydatek, Director of Technologies at Lloyd’s Register Foundation, said: “Our climate is changing. The impacts of climate change. higher temperatures, rising sea levels and more frequent and severe weather patterns all expose vulnerabilities in our infrastructure, communities and ecosystems. To meet the scale and complexity of the safety challenges we’re facing, we need to make fundamental changes to how engineering is done globally. This Foresight Review will provide some clear recommendations for how the international community can prioritise engineering solutions that uplift nature, and help protect those at risk.”
The first phase of the review will comprise of extensive desk-based research and consultation with key experts and stakeholders across the engineering value chain, including a series of regional roundtables to take place in Belem, Brussels, London, Nairobi, and Singapore. Analysis of these findings will help develop a set of recommendations, prioritised interventions and actions to accelerate and scale up the implementation of NPE solutions around the world.
Lloyd’s Register Foundation and ICSI will also build a coalition of partners in this area, who can use the foresight review to advocate for safe NPE practices and drive real, actionable change in the field.
We are looking for expert input and contributions of relevant case studies, resources and evidence of NPE in action. If you want to engage with the Foresight Review, please get in touch by sending an email to [email protected].
