HELMEPA is a Greek voluntary non-profit NGO that promotes safer and more sustainable shipping practices.
Lloyd’s Register Foundation’s strategic partnership with HELMEPA spans over a decade, working together on numerous projects with the core objective of strengthening a culture of safety among seafarers and the shipping industry and promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices among maritime communities in Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean.
Most recently, Lloyd’s Register Foundation are a key supporter of HELMEPA's METAVASEA project, a multi-stakeholder partnership that aims at advancing a people-centred transition for maritime decarbonisation in Greece, Cyprus and the wider East Mediterranean. They aim to do this by training and upskilling 1,500 seafarers, port workers, and shipping professionals in new fuels, digital transition, marine environmental awareness and soft skills, as well as raising climate awareness among 2 million residents in the region.
Partners on the project include Lloyd’s Register, the World Maritime University (WMU), Cyprus Marine Environment Protection Association (CYMEPA), Cyprus Marine & Maritime Institute (CMMI), Premium Consulting and the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture & Sustainable Development (MIO-ECSDE).
One of the primary outputs from the METAVASEA project has been working with the Piraeus Port Authority (PPA S.A.) and other key ports throughout the region to develop a common understanding of the overall framework for the green, digital and sustainable transition towards the decarbonization of shipping and ports.

“Nurturing a maritime safety culture and promoting a people-centered transition fοr maritime decarbonization is essential for the well-being of hundreds of thousands of seafarers as well as the port, fishing and boating communities of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. Thanks to the valuable and continuing support of our Associate Member Lloyd’s Register as well as Lloyd’s Register Foundation we have achieved to engage, inform and train to date approximately 3,000 seafarers and shipping professionals, fishermen and boaters in Greece and Cyprus.”
