A safer, sustainable maritime industry

The £385,000 grant will provide two full fellowships per year for the intakes of 2023, 2024 and 2025 to the MSc in Maritime Affairs offered at the WMU headquarters in Malmö, Sweden.

The World Maritime University (WMU) was founded in 1983 by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). The mission of WMU is to be the world centre of excellence in postgraduate maritime and ocean education, research and professional training, while building global capacity and promoting sustainable development.

"We are delighted that Lloyd’s Register Foundation has become a WMU stakeholder," said Dr Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, President of WMU. "One of many ways the Foundation helps create a safer world is through the advancement of public education and research. I believe that WMU and Lloyd's Register Foundation can work together to ensure a safe and sustainable global maritime sector.”

The Foundation has previously helped promote maritime education and capacity building through funding scholarships to the IMO's International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI). Our support has helped cultivate a global network of maritime law experts that are encouraging the global adoption and implementation of legal instruments designed to promote safe, secure and efficient shipping around the world.

Dr Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry discussed how the maritime industry can deliver a successful bounce back from Covid-19 at the Foundation's Safer World Conference in 2022, highlights of which can be watched below.
