The Global Initiative for Industrial Safety (GIFIS) is a collaboration between IfM Engage at the University of Cambridge, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit (GMIS), and Lloyd's Register Foundation, ensuring safety remains at the heart of fourth industrial revolution developments.
The main objectives of GIFIS include:
A key output from GIFIS is the Manifesto for Global Industrial Safety, a collective set of industry principles guiding the use of technology to manage both new and long-standing safety risks, providing a roadmap for safer industrial processes. Together, these principles represent a unified call to action for all stakeholders to prioritise the well-being of workers and ensure that technological advancement goes hand in hand with safety and sustainability.
The current phase of the project is building a global community of safety practitioners and industry leaders dedicated to advancing safety knowledge and technology-enabled solutions. Through consultations, “how-to” sessions, and strategic meetings, the community will identify best practices, fill knowledge gaps, and influence policy, especially in developing countries. A community-driven white paper, infographics, blog posts, and an updated knowledge-sharing platform will highlight emerging trends and resources.

“Emerging technologies such as big data, cloud computing, robotics, and 3D printing, are rapidly changing the industrial landscape. While they bring significant opportunities, they also pose new risks to the safety of workers, especially in the developing world. The GIFIS Manifesto serves as a beacon to ensure new technologies are adopted safely across industrial processes. We hope that governments, regulators, and business leaders will embrace the Manifesto, creating a safe, sustainable future for all.”
