World Maritime University is a centre of excellence for maritime postgraduate education, research and capacity building.

Helping strengthen global capacity and promote safe and sustainable development in the maritime industry.

Overview

Lloyd’s Register Foundation and the World Maritime University (WMU) have a long-standing strategic relationship. The Foundation currently provides funding for six fellowships in Maritime Affairs at WMU in Malmo and is engaged in an ongoing partnership including the International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) and International Maritime Organisation (IMO) to improve ferry safety in less developed countries.

Fellowships

  • The first two of six Lloyd’s Register Foundation-funded fellows - Mithilesh Kumar (India) and Faith Maraga (Kenya) - joined the WMU in September 2023. They will return to their home countries in November 2024 with invaluable knowledge and expertise that can help strengthen global capacity and promote safe and sustainable development in the maritime industry. Having Foundation alumni take up senior positions in the Indian and Kenyan government means we can ensure safety remains high on the agenda in two of the world’s most important seafaring nations. The next two Foundation fellows - from Ghana and the Philippines – start at WMU in September 2024.
  • Our Foundation-funded fellows are always interested in growing their networks in the maritime industry. Speak to our programme manager using the contact details below if you would like to set up a call.

Ferry safety

  • ‘Safety of domestic ferries: A scoping study of seven high-risk countries’ analyses past domestic ferry accidents, maritime profile, regulatory and governance climate and the political landscape in Indonesia, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Senegal, Congo, Nigeria and Tanzania, with the goal of creating a global framework to help improve country-specific decision-making capacity in ferry safety.
  • Our work on improving international ferry safety was identified as a strategic priority in our Insight Report on Safety in the Passenger Ferry Industry. Contact our programme lead in this area using the contact details below for more information and to explore potential collaborations.

One of many ways the Foundation helps create a safer world is through the advancement of public education and research. I believe that WMU and Lloyd's Register Foundation can work together to ensure a safe and sustainable global maritime sector.
